Alabama Senator Hank Erwin, citing his own moral objections to drinking, lauched a filibuster against Free The Hop's latest attempt to bring gourmet beer to Alabama.
He even bragged about it on his Twitter account:
just finished filibustering wine & beer bills Got them delayed
3:50 PM Apr 28th from mobile web
This is the same Senator Erwin that said that the Gulf Coast suffered from Hurricanes Katrina and Rita because God is judging Americans in that region for sinful behavior.
So, Senator Erwin could be the lone politician to stop Alabama from joining 48 other states and allowing consumers a better choice. He is threatening another filibuster if the bill is brought up again.
Mississippi is the only other state with such a restriction. West Virginia successfully changed their law just this year.
This brings us to Mississippi's Senator Dean Kirby. The man who single-handily killed Raise Your Pints 2009 attempt to bring gourmet beer to Mississippi all because of his "religious opposition" to alcohol (but I guess it's ok to take political donations from Budweiser).
Thank you gentleman! ...for making Alabama and Mississippi last once again. It's no wonder our two states are the laughing stock of the rest of the country.
